Verify status and documents directly in USPTO systems before paying, replying, or sharing owner information with an unfamiliar sender.

Check the official record first

Electronic certificates

The USPTO issues electronic trademark registration certificates. The official record and documents in TSDR are the primary verification path; a decorative paper notice or third-party offer is not proof of status.

Warning signs

  • A demand for payment that resembles an invoice but is not a required USPTO fee.
  • A request for “final owner verification” that cannot be matched to the official record.
  • Pressure, unusual payment methods, mismatched domains, or copied government-style graphics.
  • Incorrect owner, mark, serial number, address, or filing milestone.
Do not rely on the message alone. Preserve it, avoid opening unexpected attachments, and verify through TSDR or known counsel.
