Location and credential checks

State Records for Finding and Verifying IP Counsel

Trademark and patent systems are federal, but state licensing records remain essential for verifying lawyers. Patent practice may also require a separate USPTO registration check.

Why the state matters

A lawyer’s license status, discipline history, referral options, and consumer resources are maintained through state-specific authorities. Location may also matter for contracts, business disputes, federal court admission, convenience, and local procedure. It does not automatically determine who may handle a federal USPTO matter.

About the state preparation pages

The 51 state pages remain available as general preparation sheets, but they do not yet contain enough state-specific research to support local conclusions. Use this hub and official licensing records for verification; no page should be read as a local lawyer listing.
